Julia Kirby

Julia is an associate at Savards LLP. She practices criminal law in both trials and appeals. Julia is focused on defending her clients against state abuses of power.

Julia has clerked for some of the most prominent criminal judges in Canada. After law school, she worked for Chief Justice Tulloch, Associate Chief Justice Fairburn, and Justice Gillese at the Court of Appeal for Ontario. Following that she clerked for Justice Moldaver at the Supreme Court of Canada. These experiences in seeing the law from the judge’s side of the bench help her know what judges want to hear and strengthen her advocacy for her clients.

Before joining Savards LLP, Julia worked at another prominent criminal defense boutique in Toronto conducting trials and appeals. Prior to that, she worked at one of the largest commercial law firms in New York as a litigator.

Julia obtained her law degree from the University of Toronto, where she graduated with distinction. During law school, Julia worked at the Downtown Legal Services clinic, where she helped low-income clients without immigration status navigate the legal system. She competed in the Wilson Moot about the constitutional law of equality, and the Grand Moot, U of T’s most competitive appellate advocacy event, about the constitutional dimensions of the criminal jury selection process in Canada. Julia has an undergraduate degree from Queen’s University, where she graduated as the gold medalist in the Philosophy program.

Julia is a member of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association, and an adjunct professor in Legal Research at the University of Toronto.
