Janani Shanmuganathan

Janani Shanmuganathan is a partner at Savards LLP. Her practice includes criminal, constitutional and regulatory law. She is a passionate and dedicated advocate whose reputation and track record speaks for itself.

Janani has represented clients charged with a broad array of offences including first-degree murder, fraud, drugs, and sexual assault allegations involving multiple complainants. She regularly argues appeals at the Ontario Court of Appeal, and has argued at the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, the Newfoundland and Labrador Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada.

In addition to criminal law, Janani does regulatory work defending professionals subject to investigations and disciplinary proceedings. She has defended lawyers before the Law Society Tribunal on interlocutory suspensions, good character hearings, and discipline proceedings. She also acts as independent legal counsel to a professional regulator.

Outside of the courtroom, Janani is a frequent speaker at continuing legal education programs. She has taught courses at Osgoode Hall Law School, at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and in the University of Toronto’s undergraduate Criminology program. She is a previous board member of two legal organizations and volunteers as part of several legal initiatives including the Ontario Court of Appeal’s Probono Inmate Appeal Program. 

Over the years, Janani has been recognized for her contributions and impact on the legal community. She was one of the Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers of 2021, is the recipient of the Precedent Setter Award, the Ontario Bar Association’s Award for Pro Bono Law and the Outstanding Professional Award by the Canadian Tamil Congress.
